Plant Rescue at Commander Shepard Blvd. extension

Grape fern

WNPR is rescuing plants from the site of a road extension in Hampton. The site has been surveyed and many plants have been tagged for rescue.

Despite it being February, the site is surprisingly rich, with grape fern (pictured), cranefly orchids, Elliott's goldenrod and spicebush.

Native Plant Garden at Freedom Park

WNPR with support from the John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society has installed a fence in order to create a native plant garden located at Freedom Park in James City County. WNPR is currently in the process of planting this garden using rescued plants.

Labyrinth at York River State Park

Labyrinth and Stairs

WNPR in partnership with the Friends of York River State Park has cleared a scenic peninsula jutting into Beaver Pond at York River State Park. A labyrinth and a set of stairs has been installed. WNPR is in the process of planting native shrubs and herbaceous plants that have been rescued.

National Institute of Aerospace rescue and replanting

The National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton

The National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton contacted WNPR prior to building its new facility. WNPR rescued native plants from the site. After the facility was built, WNPR returned the native rescued shrubs to the site so that National Institute of Aerospace could use them for landscape plantings. WNPR is retaining herbaceous plants from the site that will be replanted in the site's buffer.
